U.S. Women's Open 2025

About U.S. Women's Open

The U.S. Women's Open 2025 is scheduled from May 29 to June 1 at the Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin, in the United States. Among the five major women's championships, the U.S. Women's Open is the oldest, having been held since 1946. The LPGA Tour was founded in 1950 and the 13 original founders recognized the U.S. Women's Open as a major.

The U.S. Women's Open 2025 has a purse of $12 million, the largest of all purses at the LPGA, including the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship. It has a field of 156 golfers with a cut at low 60 scorers and ties. In 2024, Ally Financial became the sponsor of the event, which increased the purse distribution percentage for the winner's share from 18% to 20%.

U.S. Women's Open History

The 79-year-old event, the U.S. Women's Open, was founded in 1946. It was originally run by the Women's Professional Golfers Association (WPGA). After its dissolution in 1949, the LPGA took over until 1953, when it was handed over to the United States Golf Association (USGA). The inaugural event was won by Patty Berg, one of the 13 LPGA founders, at the Spokane Country Club in Spokane, Washington. Berg won in a 36-hole match play format over Betty Jameson, earning the winner's share of $5,600 of the $19,700 purse.

In 2018, the week following Memorial Day became the typical date for the event. That same year, the playoff system was changed, going from three to two aggregate holes and then sudden death. In 2024, Yuka Saso won the U.S. Women's Open for the second time, after winning in 2021. She defeated Hinako Shibuno with a margin of three strokes at the Lancaster Country Club's Meadowcreek/Dogwood Course. Saso earned the $2.4 million winner's share of the $12 million purse.

U.S. Women's Open 2025 Course

The U.S. Women's Open 2025 will be held at the Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin, in the United States.

The Erin Hills was founded in 2006 as a public course designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry, and Ron Whitten and owned by Andrew Ziegler. It has a course rating of 77.9 and a slope rating of 145. The course has previously hosted the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links, the 2011 U.S. Amateur, the 2017 U.S. Open, and the 2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur.

Bob Lang, the course's sponsor, was adamant about bringing the U.S. Open to Erin Hills and, at the recommendation of USGA officials, made several layout adjustments that significantly altered a number of the course's holes. Due to financial issues, Lang had to sell the course to Ziegler in 2009.
