The Genesis Scottish Open is one of five professional golf tournaments in Scotland that are part of the Rolex Series, and it is regarded as one of the top events on the European Tour. Although it has been played on a variety of courses, in recent years it has been played on a links course, which has drawn players looking to gain experience ahead of next week's Open.
Since 1987, it has served as the final opportunity to qualify for the Open, along with the John Deere Classic. Since the Open Qualifying Series' inception in 2014, it has been a part of it. Entry into the Open has been granted to the top three players (four in 2016) who haven't already qualified. Prior to 2014, the top player or players who were not yet qualified might typically participate in the Open owing to an exemption category.
Since the Scottish Open was added to the Rolex Series in 2017 (the year the series was launched), the prize money has grown to $7 million. The PGA Tour co-sanctioned the event starting in 2022, and Genesis sponsored the championship.
Who won the Genesis Scottish Open in 2024?
Robert MacIntyre won the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open, his second PGA Tour win, earning $1.57 million as the winner's share of the $9 million purse. He defeated Adam Scott by one stroke at 18-under 262, earning his second PGA Tour championship of the year. MacIntyre won with a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole, dropping past the front edge.
After finding a way around a challenging lie in the rough, the Scot played the last five holes in 4 under par, including an eagle on the par-5 16th. Romain Langasque came in three strokes behind the winning score in solo third place.
Who won the Genesis Scottish Open in 2023?
Rory McIlroy won the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, to record his 24th career PGA Tour victory. Of the $9,000,000 purse, he took home the $1,575,000 winner's share.
Robert MacIntyre lost by one shot to McIlroy, who won the tournament with a score of 15 under 265. About one-fifth of the players broke par on the day, but MacIntyre fired an amazing 64 in the final round. On the tricky par-4 18th, MacIntyre thrilled his home audience with an approach shot to 4 feet before scoring the birdie that gave him the lead in the clubhouse.
McIlroy then won the championship by playing perfect golf all the way to the house, with clutch birdies on the par-3 17th and 18th holes. McIlroy hit a choke-down wind-cheater cut to 11 feet on the final hole before making the winning birdie putt. Three players tied for third place: David Lingmerth, Ben An, and Scottie Scheffler.
