Every year, the Dublin, Ohio, suburb of Muirfield Village Golf Club hosts the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. Jack Nicklaus, the founder and host of the tournament, held three aims in mind for the event: Firstly, to pay tribute to the people who have excelled in the game of golf, both alive and dead. Secondly, to entertain spectators with the finest players in the world competing at one of the hardest courses on the planet. Finally, and most importantly, to benefit many Greater Columbus Charities in alliance with the Nicklaus Children's Healthcare Foundation, Nationwide Children's Hospital, and numerous other local organizations.
In the first-ever Memorial Tournament, Roger Maltbie emerged victorious over Hale Irwin after an aggregate four-hole playoff, with a birdie on the 18th hole. As one of only five events classified as "invitational" by the PGA Tour, the Memorial Tournament is distinguished by its smaller field of 120 players.
Furthermore, the PGA Tour determined in June 2014 that Memorial Tournament victors receive a three-year exemption, which puts it in comparison with major tournaments such as the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Tour Championship, and World Golf Championships.
Who won the PGA Memorial Tournament in 2024?
Scottie Scheffler won the 2024 Memorial Tournament, his fifth PGA Tour win of the season, earning $4 million of the $20 million purse. The honorees of the event were Juli Inkster and Tom Weiskopf.
After hitting a clutch five-foot par putt on the last hole, following a clutch par putt on the par-3 16th hole, Scheffler won for the fifth time this season. A final-round 74 helped him hold off Collin Morikawa by a stroke on 280, under 8. Adam Hadwin, on 284, under 4, came in solo third, three strokes behind Morikawa.
Who won the PGA Memorial Tournament in 2023?
Viktor Hovland won the 2023 Memorial Tournament, marking his fourth career PGA Tour victory at Ohio's Muirfield Village Golf Club. After Denny McCarthy bogeyed the last hole in regulation for extra holes on 7-under 271, Hovland won the event with a par on the opening hole of a sudden-death playoff; he received the $3.6 million winner's share of the $20 million purse.
McCarthy's approach ball missed the green in the playoff, and he also missed a 12-foot par putt that would have put stress on Hovland. But Hovland, on the other hand, made a 7-foot par save to win the championship and a two-putt from 52 feet.
