Briana Chacon is set to participate in the 2023 Augusta National Women's Amateur, which is considered to be the strongest field in the competition's history.
On the upcoming Friday at Amen Corner, if Chacon reaches out to her front pocket, do not be surprised by her gesture. The World no. 28 recently revealed the lucky charm that she carries with her in every tournament she competes in.
The lucky charm is nothing but a keychain of San Francisco Javier (St. Francis Xavier). Briana Chacon said about her keychain:
"I always keep it every close to my heart. It's a reminder that there is always a higher power with me at all times, especially on the course. I just like to keep it there and know it's there, and it gives me a sense of peace."
Particularly in the Briana Chacon family's home in Mexico, the saint is revered as a performer of miracles. Inside the Santa Maria Magdalena Church in Sonora, Mexico, is a statue of Javier that is supposed to be reclining to be miraculous in and of itself. Many people from the area and beyond travel there every year.
Briana Chacon's parents prayed to Javier for help when they were unable to conceive. On October 4, 2001, Javier's birthday, thousands descended on Magdalena for the 10-day Fiestas de San Francisco Javier festival. Briana was born on this day.
On the evening of October 3, throngs of people assembled in front of the church to wish Javier a happy birthday. The festival's centerpiece, Saint's Day, is the following day.
Briana Chacon received her Javier charm as a present from her mother, who inherited it from her father.
