Maria Jose Marin wins medalist honors at 2024 U.S. Women's Amateur with dad on the bag

Maria Jose Marin of Colombia has won the medalist honors at the ongoing 2024 U.S. Women's Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The amateur competition is scheduled from Monday, August 5, to Sunday, August 11, 2024.

In the first round of the stroke play, Marin scored 2-under 69. She started with a bogey on the 1st hole but quickly recovered with a birdie on 3rd and an eagle on 5th. On the back nine, she scored two birdies on the 11th and 16th holes against two bogeys on the 10th and 13th holes.

Marin was tied for third after the first round. In the second round at the U.S. Women's Amateur, she scored three birdies on the 4th, 11th, and 13th holes against a bogey on the 10th. Talking about her performance, Marin said (via Golfweek):

"Competing against 156 of the best players in the world, you just get here hoping to make the cut. Being one of the top seeds means a lot to me. It means that my game is really at its top. I still have to think about tomorrow. Everything’s not done yet, so I still have to keep playing well."

Marin is currently a sophomore from Arkansas. Her father, Jose Marin, is caddying for her at U.S. Women's Amateur. Talking about it, she said (via Golfweek):

"He knows me, he’s my coach and we get along pretty good, so I think we made the right decisions to score well. It’s a really good golf course for match play. You have to be very smart with your decisions. If you have the right yardage and a good pin, you can make lots and lots of birdies."

The last and only Colombian to win the title of U.S. Women's Amateur was Mariajo Uribe in 2007. She won the title against Amanda Blumenherst, 1 up.

If Maria Jose Marin wins the U.S. Women's Amateur, she'll become the second person from the country to win the event. She said (translated in English via Fedegolf Colombia):

"It would mean a lot to continue the legacy that Mariajo Uribe left a long time ago, which boosted his career. For the Olympics, I wish him the best of luck. Being there is already a source of great pride"

Marin is currently positioned 19th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. In 32 events played, she has 13 wins and 19 top-10 finishes in her amateur career.

2024 U.S. Women's Amateur: Who'll proceed to the match play?

There are 156 players in the stroke play in the 2024 U.S. Women's Amateur and only 64 will move to the match play. 20 players are tied for the 55th position. A 20-for-10 playoff will be played on Wednesday morning at Southern Hills Country Club.
