Golf's favourite social media star, Paige Spiranac, has been an avid golfer since the age of 12. The 31-year-old has competed in the NCAA Division 1 for the University of Arizona and San Diego State University before trying her luck as a professional.
Spiranac took to her four million followers on the Instagram platform to do a question and answer session. When asked about her biggest strengths and weaknesses in her golf game, she said:
" My biggest strength is 100 percent my short game. My biggest weakness is that I am the world's biggest headcase during competition. If I have to play golf under pressure, [I'm] crumbling. Absolutely mental headcase. I have always been that way. ... And I can't fix it. I have seen sports psychologists. I have tried everything and your girl just isn't mentally strong on the golf course when there's pressure. "
Having been one of the world's top 20 junior golfers, Spiranac thrived in collegiate golf and won multiple honors for her stellar performance. Soon after she graduated, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model turned professional and made her debut on the Cactus Tour, where she achieved her only victory. She tried her luck at qualifying for the LPGA Tour in 2016 but failed and did not give it a second shot. When asked if her mental game issue weighs on her, she said:
" A hundred percent. It's so hard when you have worked majority of your life to reach a goal and you are physically capable of doing it, but, mentally it holds you back. And you know you can compete at a high level but you were just never able to get over that hurdle and that's always really challenging. Even with some of the events that I do now where I want to play and I want to play well, but, my brain just stops me from enjoying the process of the ups and downs. If I play bad, it really makes me feel so icky. "
