Originally, the Canadian Open began in 1904 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, in Canada and since then, it has been an annual event. However, with the PGA rescheduling, its date has been changed and even went to September once, but then returned to June.

One of the oldest golf events, the Canadian Open has been sponsored by RBC since 2008 and has been presenting the RBC Canadian Open Trophy since 1994. The 2024 RBC Canadian Open is slated to take place at the Hamilton Country and Golf Club, Ontario, from May 30 to June 2. The event will have a field of 156 players and a purse of $9.4 million.

RBC Canadian Open Tournament Purse History

The growing popularity of golf in America has a lot to do with the increasing purses of golf events, and so initially, the Canadian Open had a purse of $170 with a winner's share of $60 in 1904. However, the amount eventually grew to $1,575 in 1926, with a winner's share of $500.

The annual growth in the purse of golf events is rather common, and so was the case at the Canadian Open; in 64 years, from 1926 to 1990, the purse grew to be $1 million with a winner's share of $180,000. It continued to grow, with no such significant increase but an eventual growth of $100,000 to $500,000 each year.

However, the purse jumped from 2018's 6.2 million to 2019's 7.6 million, which was a growth of nearly $1.4 million. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the purse was $8.7 million in 2022, with a winner's share of $1.5 million. The 2024 event saw a growth of $400,000 from 2023's $9.4 million.
