The Players Championship, often referred to as the fifth major, will take place at the Tournament Players Course (TPC) Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, from March 13-16, 2025. The 1974 PGA Commissioner, Deane Beman, was the driving force behind the event. In 1987, the prefix "Tournament Players Championship," which had been used for over 13 years, was removed. The Players Championship is considered one of the most prominent events on the Tour, even though it is not an official golf major or one of the PGA's eight signature events. It is due to its top-tier field, larger purse, and a course like TPC at Sawgrass.
Where is the Players Championship course?
The Players Championship 2025 will be held at the TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, in the United States.
The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass was constructed in 1980 as the permanent location of The Players Championship. It was intended to enhance the whole on-site fan experience and was the first real stadium course.
Commissioner Deane Beman collaborated with Pete Dye to build a course that was balanced in terms of layout and did not favor any one style of play. Pete Dye was assisted by Alice Dye, Pete’s wife. The par-3, 17th hole's trademark "island green" is among the most well-known in golf, and the course is frequently ranked among the greatest in the world. (via TPC)
The Island Green
Island Green is the most famous hole of the Stadium course at 17th; although it is not an island, but a peninsula. From tee to green, it's only 137 yards (125 meters) long and 78 feet (24 meters) greens with a small bunker in front of it. Except for a little path to the green, the hole is surrounded by water.
The 17th was originally intended to be a straightforward par-3 course with a partial lake. It was made up of sand, but by the time the course was finished, the sand had been removed, leaving a huge crater behind. This was an accident, which, with the suggestion of Alice Dye, became the infamous Island Green.
