The Travelers Championship, originally named the Insurance City Open, was established 72 years ago, in 1952, by the Greater Hartford Community Foundation. The event had several title changes over the years due to sponsorship reasons and finally became the Travelers Championship in 2007.

The event has been held at the TPC at River Highlands for the past 40 years, and before that, it was held at the Wethersfield Country Club for 32 years. The PGA Tour bought and rebuilt Edgewood Country Club, which ultimately became the TPC at River Highlands.

In 2023, the Travelers Championship became one of the eight signature events of the PGA Tour with an elevated purse, and its purse increased from 2022's $8.3 million to 2023's $20 million. The event will have a purse at the 2024 Travelers Championship too.

Travelers Championship Course Record

Jim Furyk's 58-stroke round in the 2016 Travelers Championship final round holds the course record. He achieved the lowest 18-hole score in PGA Tour history, and a plaque honors this accomplishment on the path next to the 18th green.

The record was formerly held by amateur Patrick Cantlay, a 19-year-old University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) student who set the course record of 60 in June 2011, at the Travelers Championship. Cantlay is a nine-time professional event winner as of May 2024 and is also a 2021 FedEx Cup Champion.

History of the Course

After being established as Middletown Golf Club in 1928, the club changed its name to Edgewood Country Club in 1934, which was purchased by the PGA Tour in 1984. The "TPC of Connecticut" reopened in 1984 when Pete Dye, a golf course architect, renovated the course to TPC standards.

In 1989, Bobby Weed made more renovations to the course with advice from tour golfers Howard Twitty and Roger Maltbie. The course was then called the TPC at River Highlands. This TPC property was the third championship golf course in a network of more than 30 TPC clubs that would eventually be owned and operated by the PGA Tour.
