The Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series features various events that directly or indirectly affect players’ minds. While the playerbase has enjoyed most of them, some didn’t turn out to be what they expected. Regardless, they are canon events and are crucial for the storyline to develop. Recently, a Reddit user named SauceyVirg1n (u/NorthPermission1152) asked the r/GTA community about which canon events gamers would like to delete.
This article lists and ranks five of the most-voted canon events that fans would remove from the Grand Theft Auto series.

5 canon events that fans don’t want in the GTA series
5) Did Somebody Say Yoga? mission
Did Somebody Say Yoga? is one of the most pivotal missions in Grand Theft Auto 5. However, it is also regarded as one of the most boring missions in the GTA series. It requires you to practice yoga with Amanda De Santa and Fabien LaRouche following detailed steps.
While the mission is already slow enough, the aftermath breaks fans' hearts as Amanda leaves Michael to live with the yoga instructor.
This could probably be the reason why Redditor probablysoda (u/probablysoda) commented that it should not be canon in the game. The mission also shows the true colors of Michael De Santa’s other family members. After this, the popular protagonist spends some lonely, depressing time in his home.
4) Distinction between universes
The Grand Theft Auto series games are currently divided into 2D, 3D, and HD Universes. While all the games have various common elements among them, Rockstar Games officially marks them as separate universes. This is the reason why characters from older GTA games have not directly appeared in recent titles.
Redditor supermarioplush220 (u/supermarioplush220) stated that this distinction should be removed. By doing so, all of the titles so far will share the same universe, allowing interaction between the characters and events. Rockstar Games could do this as the newer titles often cite older events as Easter eggs.
3) Ryder’s betrayal
Ryder is one of the most popular GTA San Andreas characters who made the story entertaining. However, his betrayal of Carl “CJ” Johnson and the Grove Street Families gang is one of the most shocking plot twists that devastated hardcore GTA fans. The character is influenced by Big Smoke and becomes the reason for his own people’s downfall.
Redditor Kasaniroff (u/Kasaniroff) commented that this event should not be canon. San Andreas fans were initially in love with the character due to his witty humor and friendliness towards the protagonist. However, his betrayal not only made him a villain in the series but also caused him to die a horrific death.
2) Trevor killing Johnny
Jonathan "Johnny" Klebitz is one of the most loved characters and a secondary protagonist from GTA 4. However, he was killed by Trevor Philips in the early phase of GTA 5’s storyline. Moreover, his death scene was also very ruthless and broke the hearts of The Lost and Damned fans.
Redditor Dangerous-Jicama-247 (u/Dangerous-Jicama-247) commented that Johnny’s death should not be a canon event, stating that the character deserved better. It is worth noting that Johnny was potentially one of the characters who could beat Trevor if it was not for an emotional situation.
1) Johnny and Ashley getting back together
Ashley "Ash" Butler was Johnny’s girlfriend in Grand Theft Auto 5. However, veteran fans have known her since The Lost and Damned DLC. Throughout the years, their relationship remained uncertain and unstable. Ashley can also be regarded as a “red flag” for Johnny.
However, she and Johnny eventually got back together. Redditor badboydracoo (u/badboydracoo) commented that this should not be a canon event. Nonetheless, Johnny became one of the GTA characters we may never see again.
