Grand Theft Auto VI, commonly known as GTA 6, is a game currently in development by Rockstar Games. The studio publicly acknowledged its development being underway back in February 2022 and then released the first official trailer for it over a year later in December 2023.
However, a major leak took place well ahead of the first trailer that showcased an unfinished iteration of the game. Around 90 clips of an in-development GTA 6 were uploaded online by a leaker in September 2022, providing a look at parts of its map, weapons, vehicles, playable characters, and more.
Many were initially skeptical about these clips being from GTA 6's development, but Rockstar Games confirmed the footage as authentic via a tweet shortly after the leak occurred. The studio stated:
"We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto."
Quite a few things from the leaks were confirmed by the first trailer, such as the inclusion of Vice City, and a female protagonist named Lucia. It is interesting to note that even the trailer itself was not safe from leaks.
The video was supposed to be released officially on December 5, 2023, at 9 am ET, but got leaked on social media several hours ahead of schedule. Rockstar then had to drop it early on its social media handles as well.
No major leaks seem to have taken place since these incidents thus far. GTA 6 is currently planned to release during Fall 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
