The GTA Online Railgun is a unique and powerful weapon, functioning like a shotgun that shoots explosive rounds. While it was featured in Grand Theft Auto 5 story mode, Rockstar Games added it to the multiplayer mode in early January 2023. Since then, although a few more weapons have been added, the Railgun remains somewhat of a must-have.

In this article, we will take a look at five reasons to own a GTA Online Railgun in 2025.

Here are five reasons why you might want to own a GTA Online Railgun in 2025

1) Very useful against NPCs and players

As mentioned, the GTA Online Railgun is a powerful weapon. It shoots a projectile that explodes on impact — making it deadly against NPCs and other players. Only a shot or two is required to defeat your adversaries, especially in close-quarters combat.

The reload animation — triggered after each shot — is a bit slow, and that can be a downside. However, if you have good aiming skills, or can move around quickly in PvP or PvE combat to avoid getting shot — the Railgun is a mighty weapon to have.

2) Highly useful against vehicles too

The GTA Online Railgun's explosive nature makes it highly useful against vehicles. It should only take a shot or two to destroy any unarmored car. So, if an enemy squad is arriving at your location, simply blow up their ride to get rid of them all at once.

This applies to certain aircraft as well, such as unarmored helicopters used by enemy NPCs in missions. You should be able to take them down quickly with the Railgun, even at range with one or two hits at max on most occasions.

As for armored GTA Online vehicles, the weapon is capable of dealing with them too, but needs many more hits.

3) Can be very helpful in FIB Files

The FIB Files, added with the GTA Online Agents of Sabotage update, are the latest missions in the title as of this writing. There are a total of four FIB Files, and grinding them can make you a lot of money over time.

The missions are not too difficult, and they are quite fun to play. Using the Railgun just makes them a lot easier. You will face several enemy NPCs in the FIB Files, often at close range, and as already established, this weapon is lethal in such scenarios.

4) The Railgun looks unique

While there are countless weapons in Grand Theft Auto Online — there is nothing quite like the Railgun. Yes, there are other futuristic firearms in the multiplayer, such as the Widowmaker, and the Unholy Hellbringer — but they delve too much into the sci-fi genre and look a bit cartoonish.

The GTA Online Railgun, on the other hand, does a much better job of maintaining the balance between realism (perhaps as an experimental weapon of sorts in the current age) and futuristic technology.

5) It is an exclusive item

Ammu-Nation outlets across Los Santos and Blaine County are where you can buy most guns in GTA Online. However, the Railgun is not sold in any of these stores. For those wondering, this weapon is only made available at the Gun Van, that too occasionally.

The Gun Van changes its location every day, and sale catalog every week, so you will have to constantly check to see if the Railgun is available or not. Therefore — in addition to utility — it is also exclusivity that makes it worth adding to your arsenal in 2025.
