GTA Online has been keeping fans entertained for the last 11 years. A big reason for that has been the regular new content via free DLCs, as well as weekly updates that apply time-limited discounts on some items and payout increments on certain activities. However, Rockstar Games might be better off bringing this incredibly successful asset to an end shortly after the franchise's next entry, Grand Theft Auto 6, releases in Fall 2025.
In this article, we will take a look at five reasons why GTA Online should shut down in 2026. Readers should note that there have been no official announcements about shutting down Grand Theft Auto Online as of this writing.

Here are 5 possible reasons why GTA Online should be shut down in 2026
1) Grand Theft Auto 6 should have Rockstar's full attention
Those active in gaming communities on social media would have an idea about just how much excitement there is around Grand Theft Auto 6. Fans have formed several theories predicting the release of GTA 6 trailer 2 alone, none of which have, sadly, been correct so far.
Therefore, it is crucial that Rockstar delivers with this title, both at and after launch, which would require the studio's utmost attention. This becomes even more important, considering the upcoming title is expected to have its own multiplayer (which hasn't been officially announced yet).
2) Unncessary work load supporting a 2013 title
By the time 2026 rolls in, GTA Online will be on course to be 13 years old. While the game has held its own over the past decade and is still welcoming new players, that would be the right time to put it to bed, especially with Grand Theft Auto 6 out in 2025.
Rockstar may have the workforce to balance between the two, but instead of supporting such an old game, it would be better if the studio would look to utilize all the new technology in its upcoming title and progress with that.
3) Focusing on a potential GTA 6 PC port's development
Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled for a Fall 2025 launch, but that will only be on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Although an official PC port hasn't been announced, there is a chance that it might drop a few years down the line, as most Grand Theft Auto titles have had a delayed launch on this platform.
So, if we assume that to be the case, shutting Grand Theft Auto Online down around 2026 and focusing on developing a potential GTA 6 PC port could be the ideal move.
4) There really isn't much left to add
As mentioned, Rockstar Games has regularly added fresh content in GTA Online via free DLCs. This includes several businesses, heists, vehicles, weapons, and more. In fact, the most recent DLC, Agents of Sabotage, added yet another business (the Darnell Bros Garment Factory) featuring four heist-like missions that are collectively called the FIB Files.
While they do count as fresh content, they aren't exactly unique. The possibility of adding anything that greatly reinvents the wheel doesn't seem too good now itself, let alone after a few potential DLCs later in 2026.
5) Rockstar should look towards projects other than Grand Theft Auto
Grand Theft Auto is Rockstar Games' flagship franchise, but there are other remarkable titles under its belt too, such as Red Dead Redemption. The studio would most likely have its hands full supporting Grand Theft Auto 6 post launch in Fall 2025, but it would be good to see fresh projects in the future too.
If Rockstar decides to work on something new, supporting a 2013 title in the form of GTA Online could be an unnecessary distraction. Therefore, it should be shut down shortly after Grand Theft Auto 6 releases.
