Grand Theft Auto fans have been waiting a really long time for GTA 6. Luckily, the much-awaited title is currently scheduled to release later this year during Fall on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While not much has been showcased yet, fans expect the sequel to be much better than its predecessors, even GTA 5. Rockstar Games' 2013 release got a lot of things right, but there are areas its successor could improve upon.

In this article, we will look at five such things that Grand Theft Auto 6 should do much better than Grand Theft Auto 5.

Note - None of the things mentioned ahead have been confirmed officially. This article is subjective and only reflects the writer's opinions.

Melee combat and 4 other things GTA 6 should do much better than GTA 5

1) The antagonist

Grand Theft Auto 5 has an enjoyable main campaign with a trio of well-written protagonists in Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips, as well as a memorable supporting cast. However, the main antagonists were a letdown, as they never really felt like a threat and an inconvenience at best.

GTA 6 needs to do significantly better in this aspect, as along with protagonists, a well-written villain is also important for a quality narrative. The sequel's antagonist should feel like a major struggle for Lucia and her partner to deal with throughout the campaign, and have a commanding on-screen presence.

2) Pedestrians

High-quality pedestrians can help sell a virtual city as a living, breathing world. There's not much wrong with those in GTA 5, but there's nothing too great about them either. That said, given how Rockstar implemented realistic NPCs in Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), the upcoming title should also be on the same level, if not better.

The citizens of Leonida in GTA 6 should exhibit realistic reactions to things happening around them and follow detailed scripted routines, and players should be able to interact as well as direct conversations with them, just like in Red Dead Redemption 2.

3) Melee combat

Among the most lackluster features of Grand Theft Auto 5 is its melee combat. It is sluggish and unimpressive, especially when compared to that of its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 4, where the combat is relatively complex.

While using weapons is usually more prevalent in these games, players should be able to enjoy hand-to-hand fights as well. Grand Theft Auto 6 should, hence, feature a more hard-hitting and nuanced melee combat, along with the option for the protagonist to improve her skills over time.

The GTA 6 leaks suggested that there might be a male protagonist too, but that's not been confirmed officially yet. However, if that turns out to be the case, there should be some difference/uniqueness in each lead character's fighting style.

4) Multiplayer character creator

GTA 6's multiplayer mode has not been officially announced as of this writing. However, given the success of Grand Theft Auto 5's multiplayer, GTA Online, it seems unlikely that it won't have one of its own.

An area where Rockstar Games must do better is the character creator. This element in the 2013 title is very basic, and the sequel should give players a lot more customization options. The online character should also be voiced to give it some personality.

5) Accessible interiors

Enterable buildings can help a lot with immersion. Any virtual city would feel alive when there are places to go and things to interact within it. While Grand Theft Auto 5's map of Los Santos is packed with buildings, very few are accessible.

Even restaurants, that have been accessible since 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, are inaccessible in the 2013 title. GTA 6 should look to improve this and include lots of enterable buildings like restaurants, nightclubs, bars, malls, and shops. Not every building in the game needs to be enterable, but there should be enough to keep players busy exploring.
