Johnny Klebitz is a character with a lot of history in the Grand Theft Auto series, ranging from GTA 4 to GTA Online. Most modern gamers should already know that he met an unfortunate end in Grand Theft Auto 5. However, the recent Halloween event in GTA Online has given him what may be his last appearance in the series (barring any cutscenes that could take place in the past in a future game).
He was a popular protagonist back in The Lost and Damned, which was a single-player DLC for GTA 4 with an emphasis on the biker lifestyle. Johnny Klebitz has had his ups and downs, so let's explore his life in more detail below.
The history of Johnny Klebitz from GTA 4 to GTA Online
Johnny Klebitz first debuted as a relatively minor character in GTA 4. He only appeared in two missions in that game, which were:
- Blow Your Cover
- Museum Piece
Blow Your Cover involved him having plenty of heroin to sell, which led to him, Niko Bellic, and Playboy X fighting against undercover cops and NOOSE agents. Museum Piece is also about another deal, except it involves diamonds and Johnny Klebitz taking the money, leaving Niko with nothing.
He was also involved in Roman's kidnapping, but that's a mission in the next game in the series.
The Lost and Damned
The bulk of Johnny Klebitz's characterization comes from The Lost and Damned DLC since he's the protagonist of that game. Much of his actions from GTA 4 are referenced and expanded upon here. He's essentially the leader of The Lost gang, who eventually witnesses his crew fall apart.
As for his main plot in The Lost and Damned, Johnny Klebitz has to witness people in his crew staying loyal to Billy after tensions arise between the two sides, leading to a faction war between them. There are also matters of his old girlfriend, Ashley, eventually leading Johnny to be forced to kidnap Roman Bellic.
He then goes through the same main GTA 4 plot points involving the diamond deal.
Johnny Klebitz eventually eliminates Billy in the Alderney State Correctional Facility before Billy can snitch on him. It's a whole mess that leads The Lost and Damned protagonist to be quite jaded with their situation in Aldernery, leading them to burn down the place they used to call home.
Note that Johnny also appears in three The Ballad of Gay Tony missions. Yet, they're primarily retellings of the important diamond deal from GTA 4 through the perspective of Luis Lopez (the protagonist of The Ballad of Gay Tony).
His death in Grand Theft Auto 5
This character seemed to be moving on from this series of events, yet got dragged into a far worse position in Grand Theft Auto 5 compared to GTA 4 and its DLC episodes. Somehow, he gets addicted to meth (which is never explained why when he seemed to be in a much better state of mind in the previous games five years ago).
Ashley cheats on him with Trevor Philips, leading to the iconic scene where Trevor stomps Johnny Klebitz to death. It's ultimately a pathetic end to a once tough protagonist, especially since Trevor continues to humiliate The Lost MC throughout the plot.
Ghost in GTA Online
This iconic character would appear in GTA Online 10 years after his death in Grand Theft Auto 5, except this time, he's a ghost wailing in the spot where Trevor stomped him. Players could take a photo of him in Halloween 2023's Ghosts Exposed event after snapshotting nine other apparitions beforehand.
Given his predicament, he will unlikely appear in a GTA 6 trailer or do anything else in the current day. So this will likely be the last canon appearance of Johnny Klebitz.
