The GTA 2 parents guide will go through one of the oldest video game titles in the Grand Theft Auto series and discuss how the industry experts rated the game. GTA fans are composed of various age groups and it is not a new thing to see kids getting attracted to the franchise. However, being a parent, allowing your kid(s) to play a game is always a matter of concern; especially when the series went through many notorious controversies in the past.

However, Grand Theft Auto 2 was released even before the series got its current status. This GTA 2 parents guide will discuss every aspect of what industry experts (such as ESRB) said about the game’s nature.

Note: Some parts of this GTA 2 parents guide are subjective and only reflect the writer’s opinions.

GTA 2 parents guide: How ESRB rated the game

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rated Grand Theft Auto 2 as M. It means the game is suitable for everyone aged 17 and above. If your kid(s) belongs to this age group, then the GTA 2 parents guide advises you to let them play the game without any restrictions.

For information on what the ESRB is, here is the official description on its website:

“We are the non-profit, self-regulatory body for the video game industry. Established in 1994, our primary responsibility is to help consumers—especially parents—make informed choices about the games their families play.”

However, the board’s ratings are only applicable to the consumers of the USA, Canada, and Mexico. If you live outside these countries, the GTA 2 parents guide suggests you look for your country’s official statement regarding the game.

Nonetheless, the Entertainment Software Rating Board pointed out these parameters for the game that GTA 2 parents guide readers should note:

  • Animated Blood
  • Animated Violence
  • Strong Language
  • Suggestive Themes

If you think your kid(s) can maturely handle these things, then you should let them enjoy Grand Theft Auto 2.

Understanding the ‘Animated Blood’ ESRB pointer in the Grand Theft Auto 2 gameplay

Bloody scenes are very common in the Grand Theft Auto series games, and Grand Theft Auto 2 also has its fair share. However, since the game belongs to the 2D Universe of the franchise, blood and gore in the gameplay are very bland. The ESRB provided the following official description for the term ‘Animated Blood’:

“Discolored and/or unrealistic depictions of blood.”

Therefore, the GTA 2 parents guide readers should not worry about their kid(s) seeing extreme blood and gory scenes in the game. As the game involves shooting and killing people, blood animations are there to depict the cause-and-effect relation.

However, it was not as detailed as the 3D or HD Universe titles of the series. Grand Theft Auto 5 has the most realistic and detailed blood effects in the series to date and many gamers play it without any issues.

Gore and violence are interrelated in Grand Theft Auto 2. The game is a crime simulator where you roleplay as a criminal to commit various felonies. As is customary, law enforcement will try to stop, and you will have to retaliate using various violent means. However, GTA 2 parents guide readers should not worry much about this aspect as the violent scenes were not at all scary.

Grand Theft Auto 2 uses a top-down perspective and the graphics of the game are of very low resolution. The violent scenes look cartoonish because of these two things. Therefore, the Entertainment Software Rating Board labeled it as ‘Animated Violence’.

Rockstar Games allows players to shoot other NPCs, crush people with cars, fight with pedestrians, and do many other acts of violence. GTA 2 parents guide readers should note that these are the core things that make the series popular among gamers.

The Grand Theft Auto series has always been notorious for using strong language in its games. While other studios try their best to make their games as humble as possible, Rockstar Games goes berserk on this aspect and includes strong language without any censoring.

However, GTA 2 parents guide readers should note that the influence of strong language in this game is very low compared to some other popular titles, such as Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto 5.

Most of the time, the characters in Grand Theft Auto 2 use strong language to express their frustration or during a comic scene. If you think your kid(s) are mature enough to listen to mild profanity, then you should let them play the game.

Understanding the ‘Suggestive Themes’ ESRB pointer in the Grand Theft Auto 2 gameplay

The ‘Suggestive Themes’ pointer is very confusing for many people. The official website of the Entertainment Software Rating Board describes it as follows:

“Mild provocative references or materials.”

This means the Grand Theft Auto 2 gameplay has some scenes that suggest offensive and/or vulgar scenes but does not show them explicitly. This was a common practice among gaming studios in the past. Since GTA 2 uses a top-down perspective, it could not show explicit content as directly as modern video games.

However, readers should not worry about this aspect as such scenes are considerably vague. Rockstar Games knows its audience well, and it includes such things to keep the gameplay spicey.

While the Entertainment Software Rating Board suggests only players above 17 to play Grand Theft Auto 2, you can also let your kid(s) play the game if they are closing the age limit. Considering how modern Grand Theft Auto games are, GTA 2 feels very moderate and childlike. It was one of the smallest games in the series and there is no harm if modern-age kids play it.

Therefore, the GTA 2 parents guide suggests readers to let them enjoy the decade-old game. If you are still worried, you can accompany your kids during the gameplay.

Grand Theft Auto 2 was a PlayStation 1-era game that was released in October 1999 on the PC and PlayStation 1 at the same time. Rockstar Games later ported it to the Sega Dreamcast and GameBoy Color. You can also play the game on the Nintendo GameCube through the Game Boy Player.

However, after that, the studio never brought the game to the newer consoles. Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001 and bid farewell to the 2D Universe of the series.

You can play as Claude Speed in the game. However, GTA 2 parents guide readers should not confuse him with Claude from Grand Theft Auto 3. Both are two different characters from two separate universes. While GTA 2’s protagonist’s full name is Claude Speed, Grand Theft Auto 3’s protagonist is only known as Claude.

The game is based on a location called Anywhere City, which is divided into three districts or sectors. They are as follows:

  • Downtown District
  • Residential District
  • Industrial District

While the gameplay is small compared to modern GTA games, Rockstar Games included 67 missions in Grand Theft Auto 2. Claude Speed receives these missions over pay phones placed in various locations. Moreover, the missions are also divided district-wise.

GTA 2 parents guide readers should note that the payouts for these missions are also different based on the district and the pay phone color. They are as follows:

Downtown District:

  • Green Pay Phone - 20,000
  • Yellow Pay Phone - 40,000
  • Red Pay Phone - 60,000

Residential District:

  • Green Pay Phone - 30,000
  • Yellow Pay Phone - 50,000
  • Red Pay Phone - 70,000

Industrial District:

  • Green Pay Phone - 40,000
  • Yellow Pay Phone - 60,000
  • Red Pay Phone - 80,000

Each mission from a particular color pay phone in a particular district will pay the same amount as shown above. GTA 2 parents guide readers should also note that the color of the pay phone indicated the difficulties of the missions. While the green pay phone missions are the easiest, the yellow and red pay phone missions become increasingly harder.

Rockstar Games also included three side missions that occur in each of the cities. They are as follows:

  • Kill Frenzies
  • Tokens
  • Wang Cars

The Kill Frenzies side mission is very similar to modern-day Rampage missions in Grand Theft Auto games. In GTA 2, players must kill several NPCs and destroy some cars using on-foot weapons or a weaponized vehicle.

The Tokens side mission is a collectible mission where you have to collect 50 tokens with GTA 2 written on them. In the Wang Cars mission, you have to find eight GT-A1 cars within the Residential district.

Grand Theft Auto 2 is considered one of the best classic GTA games and every gamer must try it at least once.
