GTA 5 100 percent guide: What you need to do
If you sit down to complete the main story of GTA 5, it will take you around 15 hours, given you play the game nonstop. However, if your goal is to complete the entire game, the duration may extend up to 20 hours. We advise you not to play the game continuously and instead do it step-by-step.
Rockstar Games has included the following amount of things in GTA 5 Story Mode:
- Story Missions: 69
- Strangers and Freaks missions: 66
- Random Events: 60
- Hobbies and Pastimes: 61
- Miscellaneous Tasks: 30
Thankfully, you only need to do the following amounts of tasks from each category:
- Story Missions: 69
- Strangers and Freaks missions: 20
- Random Events: 14
- Hobbies and Passtimes: 42
- Miscellaneous Tasks: 16
Regardless, completing the decade-old game can be a big task. If you are not playing the game for the first time, there is a chance that you have already completed a fraction of the journey. We advise you to check your progress first. For that, follow any of these two steps:
Checking the progress within the game:
- Open the pause menu of the game.
- Go to the Stats tab.
- Scroll down to the 100% Checklist option to see your progress.
Using the Rockstar Social Club to check progress:
- Go to the Rockstar Games official website on your real-life browser.
- Click on the Games tab and select GTA 5.
- Click on the Story tab and select Stats. The Career Overview page should appear there.
You should ideally use the second method as it gives you more details of your progress. The in-game method only gives you the number of activities, whereas the website gives you the names of the missions as well.

You should note that while the first few and last few missions are in chronological order, a majority of the missions in the middle can be completed without any strict order. However, if you have read the GTA 5 Stock Market Guide, you might know that Lester’s Assassination Missions should be kept for later to reap benefits from the in-game trading market.
Lester Crest offers five assassination missions that have a direct impact on the in-game stock market. Therefore, we advise you to do The Hotel Assassination mission whenever prompted and keep the rest of the missions until you complete the finale. You just have to ignore the green L marker on the map after The Hotel Assassination mission.
Also note that the finale has the following three options:
- Option A: Kill Trevor (Something Sensible).
- Option B: Kill Michael (The Time's Come).
- Option C: Deathwish (The Third Way).
While you can choose any of the missions and get the progress, we recommend you choose Option C: Deathwish (The Third Way) for various gameplay-related reasons.
