Grand Theft Auto fans on the GTA 6 subreddit were recently discussing the type of car-driving physics they'd love to see in the next title, and some interesting suggestions came up. Rockstar Games held on to the same arcade-like driving physics in the 3D Universe Trilogy for the longest time. There were slight improvements throughout the years, which made San Andreas feel much better than its predecessors, but the overall handling remained indistinguishable.
However, that all changed drastically, as Grand Theft Auto 4 introduced a highly realistic physics system. Rockstar then downgraded this in Grand Theft Auto 5 with a much more simplistic experience, although it's still more realistic compared to the 3D Universe games.
Now, fans are debating about the type of car-driving physics they want to see in GTA 6, and they have different opinions on it.
GTA 6 fans discuss their preferred car-driving physics model
The question about the car-driving physics was raised by a Redditor named u/No_Ad1435 on the r/GTA6 subreddit, as the OP (original poster) compared the vastly different driving physics of Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5. They asked if fans would like to see a more realistic system like in the former or a more arcade-like system like in the latter.
They added that the longevity of Grand Theft Auto 5 owes it to the game's more accessible car-driving physics, as it's more lenient to less skilled drivers. It should be noted that while many players loved the vehicle handling in Grand Theft Auto 4, a large number of fans, especially newcomers, found it too realistic and hence, punishing.
Grand Theft Auto Online is thriving simply due to how Rockstar keeps adding new vehicles with every content update. Vehicles are a big part of the series, which is made obvious by the title itself, and as such, the car-driving physics could be a deciding factor in what makes GTA 6 successful.
One fan by the name of u/Listen_to_Psybient suggested that it should be completely dependant on the type of car instead. They added how Driv3r (Driver 3), a popular GTA competitor, had different handling for different types of cars, and older models were more "fun to drive."
Another fan, u/quittin_Tarantino, explained the flaws of the car-driving physics in Grand Theft Auto 5. They stated how the handling feels a bit too easy and all vehicles feel kind of similar, as you can do fairly unrealistic stunts without any consequences. They also pointed out how the crash physics aren't quite believable either, with larger vehicles not doing much damage to smaller ones.
Many other Redditors added their own opinions, but most of them seem to agree that the driving physics in GTA 6 shouldn't be similar to any of its predecessors. They don't want the extremely realistic handling of Grand Theft Auto 4 where you can't speed up at all without crashing or the no-consequences system of Grand Theft Auto 5, where you can pull off ridiculous stunts without a scratch. Instead, most of them want a middle-ground between these two handling systems.
