Grand Theft Auto Online's PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version has a subscription service called GTA + (or Plus). It charges a monthly fee and offers certain fixed as well as rotating benefits every cycle in return. Notably, Rockstar Games introduced an exclusive Vinewood Club app for its subscribers with the recent Bottom Dollar Bounties update which has some very useful features.
This has worried a section of the Grand Theft Auto community about Plus' possible implications on GTA 6 and its currently unannounced online mode. A fan on Reddit, u/Ubermacht_Cypher-27, expressed concern over the same, speculating if players would need a Plus subscription just to access the sequel's multiplayer.
One of the comments by u/IchigoooKurosaki on the above post suggested that some GTA 6 Online features could be nerfed to force players into buying a Plus subscription.
Few even blamed Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, for this. In fact, u/sookmaaroot claimed to know people at North (likely Rockstar North) and that the blame solely went to the latter company.
That said, Plus is not the only thing that has worried fans regarding monetization of Grand Theft Auto Online. Fans have been heavily criticizing Shark Cards, the game's iteration of microtransactions, for a long time as well. Few in the comments proudly boasted about never having purchased them.
The concern is understandable, as attempts have been made to make GTA + seem more enticing of late. For example, besides all the Grand Theft Auto Online benefits, subscribers get free access to a library featuring some classic Rockstar titles. Even the recently added Overflod Pipistrello super car was made available for subscribers a week earlier than other players.
GTA 6 fans ponder about the role of GTA + in the upcoming game
The rise of Plus has Grand Theft Auto fans worried about them possibly being restricted from using certain features in the sequel unless subscribed to it. In addition to its multiplayer, there is also concern about how it may affect Grand Theft Auto 6's story mode.
Rockstar Games' former Senior Camera Artist, Joe Rubino, recently stated in an interview that the cancellation of GTA 5 story mode DLCs was a business decision due to the success of Grand Theft Auto Online.
Fans speculate about this being repeated with the sequel, but that, obviously, remains to be seen. Grand Theft Auto 6's multiplayer, as stated earlier, is yet to be officially announced, which is why there is currently no idea about what Plus' exact role could be in the upcoming title.
