Grand Theft Auto (GTA) titles have featured a variety of NPCs so far. However, not a single entry in the series has featured children as NPCs yet. A logical explanation could be Rockstar Games wanting to exclude kids from being a part of the violent gameplay, and a fan on Reddit, u/mr_tuba_gun, also expressed the same in their recent post on the platform.
Here's what they said:
"Of course the real world answer is because kids in violent games are still taboo and would certainly get the game banned or rated Adults Only."
The OP also asked the community about what they think could be the reason behind kids' absence in GTA games in terms of lore, to which u/TropicalKing replied by saying that all the kids are inside their homes playing Grand Theft Auto.
"All the kids are inside playing Grand Theft Auto."
Another witty answer was by u/Bunkbeduser in reply to the comment above, stating that they were playing Righteous Slaughter instead.
For those unaware, Righteous Slaughter is likely Grand Theft Auto's parody of the Call of Duty franchise. Michael De Santa's son, Jimmy, is seen playing the game in his room in Grand Theft Auto 5's story mode. A Righteous Slaughter shirt was also seen briefly in the first GTA 6 trailer.
There were many such interesting answers from GTA fans on the post, such as u/Mutant_Star's comment stating that all the kids were at the Bullsworth Academy, which is the school from Rockstar's beloved 2006 release - Bully.
Notably, u/IamTheLiquor199 highlighted that there is a baby in Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories.
This is true, but the newborn child, Mary-Beth Williams, isn't like other usual NPCs.
GTA fans discuss the absence of NPC kids in the series
The kind of violent gameplay Grand Theft Auto games feature is possibly the best explanation for the absence of kids as NPCs in them.
With the GTA 6 release date set to arrive next year, it will be interesting to see if Rockstar makes any changes in this department. That being said, it happening doesn't seem very likely and even the sequel's trailer seemingly didn't feature any.
However, not much has been revealed about the upcoming title officially yet, so at this point, it cannot be completely confirmed whether kids will or won't be a part of it. Fans will have to wait for more information, which is expected to arrive later this year either in the form of another trailer or official GTA 6 screenshots.
