Grand Theft Hamlet has recently been making headlines in the gaming community as it is an actual movie made within the world of Grand Theft Auto 5 Online. While Rockstar Games allows players to do various things in the open world, a video game movie based on William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is certainly the first of its kind.
While the entire thing may sound like an elaborate prank, GTA fans should note that the movie was released in theaters and also has reviews from various established critics.
Interesting details about the Grand Theft Hamlet movie
On December 19, 2024, the popular streaming website MUBI (X/@mubi) announced Grand Theft Hamlet. It is a satirical movie based on the GTA Online experience. According to the movie’s official website, it was directed by Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane and includes seven other members.
While the 1:37 minute-long trailer is available to watch globally, the movie itself will be released on January 17, 2025, in theaters across the USA. The synopsis of Grand Theft Hamlet reads as follows:
“With theaters shut during the COVID-19 pandemic, two jobless actors, Sam and Mark, are uncertain about their futures - finding solace in the virtual chaos of Grand Theft Auto Online. Desperate for purpose, they decide to stage Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the ultra-violent world of their favorite game.”
While fans have been waiting for the GTA 6 trailer 2, a movie based on GTA Online has certainly grabbed their attention. It is worth noting that the movie has already won 23 awards and recognitions, with a notable few being:

The movie currently has a Rotten Tomato score of 94% and was reviewed by various media houses including The Guardian, The Telegraph, IGN, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter.
Grand Theft Hamlet is currently running in UK theaters and many viewers have spoken quite positively about the movie.
The 91-minute-long movie is made entirely within the Grand Theft Auto Online universe. The trailer showed the creators auditioning players for various roles based on William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
