GTA 6's price might have been hinted at in the Take-Two Interactive earnings report, which briefly touched upon the standard of AAA games costing $70. For those out of the loop, many modern video games are priced at $70 USD. Different regions will have different prices for the upcoming title, but this article focuses on the USD currency since that's what was spoken about in Take-Two Interactive's most recent earnings call.
Past Grand Theft Auto games were priced at $50 or lower. Hence, seeing GTA 6 cost way more could be surprising to some players. It is vital to mention that Take-Two Interactive didn't confirm the price change per se, but it did say that the company was "not seeing a pushback on frontline price" for other titles.
Take-Two Interactive Earnings Call hints at GTA 6 potentially costing $70 at launch
During a Q&A for the Take-Two Interactive earnings call, Brian Fitzgerald of Wells Fargo Securities asked about fans struggling to buy games costing $70. The CEO of that company, Strauss Zelnick, had a lengthy response, but the important part was:
"In terms of the pricing point that you raised, we're not seeing a pushback on frontline price. What we're seeing is consumers are seeking to limit their spending by going either to the stuff they really, really care about blockbusters or value. And sometimes it could be both. And the good news is that we have a bunch of blockbusters, and we have a wonderful catalog."
If other games are currently doing fine priced at $70 — according to Zelnick — then there is no reason to assume one of the most anticipated video games of all time wouldn't sell well at that cost, either.
Funnily enough, Strauss Zelnick does later bring up Grand Theft Auto, responding to a question about LEGO Drive being worth $70. Here's what he said:
"So, the $70 price point, I would say, is a bit of a red herring. We think that the game is certainly worthwhile with that experience. But the experience itself when you look at sort of the over — if you compare that experience to a Grand Theft Auto, for example, obviously, there's a big difference. In the depth of the storyline, the vastness of the world, etc., LEGO Drive is an open-world driving experiences, but it's not Los Santos, so there's quite a bit — it's probably not even the city with NBA."
Interestingly, LEGO Drive is worth $69.99 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If Grand Theft Auto is being compared to it for an example of a big difference, then it would be interesting to see if GTA 6 is priced similarly (around $70) or turns out to be even more expensive.
Other Take-Two earnings call news
Take-Two Interactive's CEO also stated that fiscal 2025 would be a huge year for the company. Strauss Zelnick even said:
"For the last several years, we have been preparing our business to release an incredibly robust pipeline of projects that we believe will take our company to even greater levels of success."
Several fans speculate that GTA 6 will come out by fiscal year 2024 or 2025, especially since some old leaks suggested that those years could be the game sees its release. In fiscal 2025, Strauss Zelnick expects "to achieve over $8 billion in net bookings and over $1 billion in adjusted unrestricted operating cash flow."
Naturally, some big-name games (like GTA 6) have to be released to reach such lofty milestones.
