According to a well-known former Rockstar Games developer, the GTA 6 leaks of 2022 were not that significant. He believes the only reason they seemed so impactful was because of Rockstar's penchant for secrecy. For context, a lot of gameplay footage from an early build of Grand Theft Auto 6 was leaked back in 2022, and it revealed many details about the game.
Obbe Vermeij, the former Technical Director at Rockstar North, has been revealing a lot of behind-the-scenes details and information about the 3D Universe. In a recent interview with YouTuber SanInPlay on July 22, 2024, he turned his attention to Grand Theft Auto 6, and here's what he had to say about the GTA 6 leaks.
Former Rockstar dev explains why GTA 6 leaks aren't important
As reported by GamesRadar, Obbe Vermeij recently had an interview with Brazilian Grand Theft Auto YouTuber SanInPlay, which has been embedded above. The YouTuber asked Vermeij whether he had followed the massive GTA 6 leaks that occurred back in September 2022. Vermeij responded that he hasn't followed them closely but he knows about the videos. The former Grand Theft Auto dev then added:
"...the leaks are usually not as important as people think. It's just because there's millions of people waiting for any news, and Rockstar doesn't give them any news."
Vermeij then said that he understands the need for secrecy and why big companies like Rockstar don't reveal any details about their games before they come out. He explained:
"I understand it because whenever a big company says anything, whether it's Rockstar or EA or Ubisoft or whatever, it gets analyzed and it often gets spun negatively."
The former GTA dev then further explained the company's stance:
"So, from their point of view, their best bet is just to be quiet. That's what they're doing. It's a shame it's gone that way, but it's not just their fault. It's also the fault of the public because...everybody's just attacking the big companies all the time."
In the same interview, Obbe Vermeij also says that GTA 6 won't be as big of a leap from GTA 5 as some fans expect. The former Technical Director has worked in almost every Grand Theft Auto title from GTA 3 in 2001 to GTA Chinatown Wars in 2009. Vermeij has been talking about several interesting details from the 3D Universe games starting from November 2023. He's revealed why we couldn't fly in Liberty City, why there would be random plane crashes in San Andreas, and more.
The GTA 6 leaks were possibly one of the biggest leaks in video gaming history, and it even led to the main hacker being arrested. The leaked footage revealed many details about GTA 6, such as the upcoming game having two playable protagonists, a map based on Florida featuring Vice City, and some seemingly new gameplay features.
