It's been a little over a year since the first official GTA 6 trailer was released, but Rockstar Games hasn't shared any updates since then. Fans are quite disappointed with the absence of any new information, especially a second trailer, given how highly anticipated this Grand Theft Auto installment is. Interestingly, Mike York, former animator at Rockstar Games, recently talked about this silence.
York commented about the company's possible marketing tactics in a video on his YouTube channel York Reacts. Here, he stated that while Rockstar could easily announce a trailer date, they don't do it on purpose. He said:
"Specifically Rockstar in general, they're very secretive about what they do, and this is a really cool tactic in a sense right, because you are allu-, its kind of allurive, I don't know what the word is for it, but it creates allure, and it creates mystery, and it creates people talking about it without them having to do anything, right." The ex-Rockstar dev continued:
"The more they're silent, the better it is, because the more people will be antsy and want to talk about it, and kind of have this feeling of not knowing what's gonna happen. They could easily release the trailer date and be like, hey this is when the trailer's coming out, but they don't do it, and they don't do it on purpose, because its a really really good marketing kind of tactic in a sense if you think about it."
GTA 6 is currently scheduled for a Fall 2025 release, but as mentioned, only a single trailer has been released so far, with no sign of when to expect the next one.
Ex-Rockstar Games dev talks about possible GTA 6 marketing tactics and fan theories
The silence from Rockstar Games has also given rise to a lot of GTA 6 fan theories of late. These are usually focused on predicting when might there be a new announcement. Mike York discussed some of these fan theories in the same video, sharing his opinion on them.
"I just think that stuff is awesome, because you know, when I used to work over there, that was some of the stuff we geeked out about, like um, when we would release a new trailer or release screenshots or whatever, what was really interesting or fun as a game developer over there was seeing everybody's thoughts and opinions on what we released." Mike York's stint at Rockstar Games lasted from October 2012 to September 2017. During this time, he worked on Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
