A recently started strike by the SAG-AFTRA has GTA 6 fans worried about the game’s release. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive, its parent company, previously announced that the highly anticipated title would be released in late 2025. However, on July 26, 2024, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists started its seemingly indefinite strike against video game developers over the use of artificial intelligence in their projects.
While Take-Two Interactive has been confirmed to be affected by the strike, its impact on GTA 6’s release is still uncertain.
Take-Two Interactive gets hit with the SAG-AFTRA strike before the release of GTA 6
The SAG-AFTRA strike reportedly includes major gaming studios such as Take-Two Interactive, Activision Publishing, Inc., Disney, Insomniac, Electronic Arts Inc., Epic Games, and Warner Bros. Games.
According to the protesting organization, the members are striking against the extensive use of artificial intelligence in video games rather than using actors and other artists. Since Take-Two Interactive was mentioned in the agenda, many media organizations initially stated that the upcoming release of GTA 6 might be affected by the strike.
However, later it came to the limelight that only those video game projects that started after late 2023 would be affected by the SAG-AFTRA strike.
It is worth noting that the upcoming title has been rumored to be in development since 2014. Therefore, if the 2023 deadline is true, GTA 6's ongoing development and the 2025 release window should not be affected. However, since Take-Two Interactive is in the hot waters right now, fans are generally worried.
It is worth noting that last year, Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, stated that Grand Theft Auto 6 was safe from protests from the artists’ community. However, this was before Rockstar Games faced the new leaks and revealed the game.
Even after the reveal, there were words on the streets that the GTA 6 release date could be pushed back to 2026. It has been over seven months since the first trailer dropped and Rockstar Games has posted nothing related to the upcoming game ever since. While some fans were already worried that the gaming studio might announce a delay after breaking the long silence, the recent SAG-AFTRA strike has added fuel to that speculation.
The notorious teenage leaker disclosed that Rockstar Games had invested nearly $2 billion in developing the game. Some sources also previously claimed that the studio was using artificial intelligence to generate non-important details such as building interiors. If Take-Two Interactive goes on par with the SAG-AFTRA strike and employs artists to create such features, then the GTA 6 price may also be affected.
However, readers are advised to take the information with a grain of salt as neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has yet commented on the matter.
