Halo becomes the next victim before GTA 6 release, dev build leaks online

While the entire gaming community is eagerly looking forward to the GTA 6 release, the Halo gaming franchise faced a massive leak on December 27, 2024. The leaks contained 90 GB of Halo Digsite Archive and many undisclosed details from previous Halo titles. Rockstar Games also faced several leaks in the past two years, where various details of its upcoming and past titles became public.

The Halo files were leaked after 343 Industries (currently known as Halo Studios) hired some modders to work on the old data.

Halo faces a massive leak before GTA 6 release

An X user named VISCERAL (X/@zvis_ceral) first reported the 90 GB Halo leaks. They stated that the leaked files contained:

“...some Builds, Tools, docs, etc. from various Halo Titles”.

It is worth noting that the notorious GTA 6 leaks of September 2022 also contained various details from past Grand Theft Auto titles, which were disclosed later. While the GTA leaks date back to the early 2000s, the recent Halo leaks date back to 1998 and also involve the Bungie gaming studio.

Well-known video game journalist Tom Henderson reported the following in his recent article on the matter:

“This was known as the Digsite project, with some users familiar with the project, including one modder who had worked on the project, confirming that the leak was genuine.”

He also shared a statement from one of the modders, where the latter stated the following:

“As with all leaks of this nature, downloading them is at your own risk, and the files can be found on various social media platforms.”

The new GTA leaks — which surfaced online on December 25, 2024 — disclosed various details from Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. While the studio has yet to comment on the incident, Obbe Vermeij (the former Technical Director at Rockstar Games) assured that the leaks related to the 2001 title were true.

The leaked GTA documents disclosed Rockstar Games’ ambitious plans for the Grand Theft Auto 3 Online version. However, the studio ultimately had to abandon these plans due to various technical limitations.

Nonetheless, so frequent leaks before the GTA 6 release have certainly stunned the gaming community in general.
