Rockstar Games has reportedly been the victim of a new leak ahead of the GTA 6 release in Fall 2025. On this occasion, the design documents of several pre-2010 Grand Theft Auto titles have reportedly been leaked online. They allegedly contain details of a multiplayer mode for a Grand Theft Auto title that came out in 2001, which, as most fans would know, is Grand Theft Auto 3.
This, interestingly, seems to be twice in a row that Rockstar has suffered a leak around Christmas. Last year, Grand Theft Auto 5's source code leaked around the holiday, disclosing intriguing information, such as some canceled story mode DLCs for the 2013 title.
Rockstar Games reportedly suffers old GTA titles' design document leak
The leaked documents reportedly contain information about Grand Theft Auto 3, San Andreas, Vice City Stories, and Grand Theft Auto Advanced (released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004).
As mentioned, the leaked details allegedly contain information about a planned multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto 3, and that seems to have garnered a lot of interest. In fact, Obbe Vermeij, former Technical Director at Rockstar Games, has stated on X that he worked on it for about four weeks, and that Barking Dog Studios (now Rockstar Vancouver) was asked to explore its design:
"There were 2 parts to gta3-online that happened: I wrote a basic implementation of a bare bone deathmatch. I worked on it for 4 weeks or so. Players could get points by killing each other. Players could steal cars etc. It was obvious it needed a LOT more work and we abandoned it."
Talking about how he was a bit "hazy on the other part," he continued:
"I'm a bit hazy on the other part. Barking Dog were asked to explore the design of what gta-online could look like."
While this multiplayer never saw the light of day, Rockstar eventually realized plans for a Grand Theft Auto multiplayer with Grand Theft Auto 4's multiplayer mode, and then, on a much bigger scale, with Grand Theft Auto 5 through GTA Online. Needless to say, this has emerged as one of its most successful projects ever.
GTA 6 is also expected to have a multiplayer mode, but that hasn't been officially announced yet. Interestingly, the upcoming title's development clips were leaked online in September 2022, and its first trailer leaked hours before the planned release as well. The fanbase now awaits a fresh look at it via GTA 6 trailer 2, for which there is no release date as of this writing.
