Star Wars Outlaws, an upcoming AAA video game, is claimed to have a gatekeeping system like the GTA franchise. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the game’s creative director Julian Gerighty stated that their upcoming game would have a gatekeeping system where players may face difficult situations if they were spotted doing crimes in the open world.
Julian Gerighty also went on to briefly explain Star Wars Outlaws' crime system, with Grand Theft Auto as an example.
Upcoming Star Wars game takes inspiration from GTA for a wanted-level system
On June 7, 2024, Entertainment Weekly (X/@EW) published an exclusive interview with the team of Star Wars Outlaws, where Julian Gerighty stated that the wanted-level system similar to the GTA series games had been implemented in their upcoming project. Explaining about the gatekeeping mechanic in the gameplay, the creative director stated:
“Think (of) the police in Grand Theft Auto…If you start being seen doing crimes, that will start getting them to chase you. If you take some of them out, then it gets worse and worse, where they'll send, at the ultimate level, Death Troopers - and maybe even worse."
This is a reference to the multiple tiers of wanted levels in GTA titles. Rockstar Games uses up to six stages of wanted levels in its games. Sometimes, it also caps the police levels to five stars, as seen in the Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks.
If you commit a crime in front of the NPCs in Grand Theft Auto games, sometimes they report you to the cops. Other times, the cops directly spot you breaking the law. Star Wars Outlaws is also said to have a similar mechanism, where players have to control their crime spree.
Another signature style of GTA games is that if you start fighting with law enforcement, your wanted level gradually increases with time. Julian Gerighty said that Star Wars players will also face similar consequences, where they might have to face Death Troopers or other tougher gatekeepers.
