Everything eventually comes to an end, and the same can be said for Grand Theft Auto, which is why GTA 6 could be the last title in the series. Now, although the Take-Two CEO did mention Grand Theft Auto 7, he might not have been serious. Even if he was, plans change, and it's hard to predict what would happen so far into the future anyway.

With that in mind, we've compiled a list of reasons that prove why GTA 6 could be the last title in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Fans should keep in mind that this is mostly hypothetical, as Rockstar or Take-Two haven't confirmed this.

GTA 6 could be the last Grand Theft Auto game

1) Long time in development

Grand Theft Auto 5 was launched in 2013, and its sequel, Grand Theft Auto 6, is scheduled to launch in 2025. This means that the 12-year gap years between these two games will be the longest recorded one in the history of the GTA franchise. Now, if Grand Theft Auto 6 took so long to come out, it's hard to imagine when the next game will even be conceptualized.

The gap between Grand Theft Auto games has increased with each title. So if Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming out 12 years after its predecessor, the next game, if any, would take too long for the series to stay relevant. As such, it's safer to assume that GTA 6 could be the last Grand Theft Auto game from the franchise.

2) Success of online mode

The success of multiplayer in Grand Theft Auto 5 proved that Rockstar can keep updating their game by following a live-service model, and it would live for ages. Now, Grand Theft Auto Online was the first example of such a big success story, as GTA 4's multiplayer wasn't that big.

With over a decade of experience, the next multiplayer mode, presumably in Grand Theft Auto 6, will probably outlive the lifespan of Grand Theft Auto Online. This means that GTA 6 could be the last game in the series, as Rockstar will rather focus on updating the game continuously instead of launching a sequel.

3) Grand Theft Auto Online updates

An alternative to the theory of Grand Theft Auto 6 having its own, successful, everlasting online mode is that the current iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online keeps continuing instead. Or, this could happen in conjunction with a new online mode of Grand Theft Auto 6. In any case, it would mean that making a new Grand Theft Auto game might become unnecessary.

Take-Two kept away from making Grand Theft Auto 6 for the longest time following the monetary success of Grand Theft Auto Online. So, history will probably repeat itself, but on a much larger scale, which means that there might never be a need for another title, and GTA 6 could be the last one.

4) Grand Theft Auto RP

If Rockstar decides to focus on Grand Theft Auto RP as a completely different game, it will be yet another reason why GTA 6 could be the last title in the series.

Rockstar Games acquired Cfx.re, the modding team behind FiveM, one of the most popular Grand Theft Auto RP server hosts. As such, there are speculations that Rockstar might either integrate Grand Theft Auto RP into the next game or create a different game altogether.

5) The trilogy will be complete

The Grand Theft Auto series came to prominence after the 3D Universe Trilogy, the three consecutive games from the franchise that were made using the Renderware engine. This includes Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. Although these games had spin-offs and Rockstar expanded the franchise to other platforms as well, the Trilogy remains the most impactful.

With the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar will be completing the HD Universe Trilogy, which started with Grand Theft Auto 4. So, GTA 6 could be the game that completes the HD Universe Trilogy and finally brings the franchise to a close.
