GTA San Andreas VR is a project that has been in development for quite some time. Mark Zuckerberg announced it a couple of years ago and Meta even provided an update on it recently, saying it was still in the works. Unfortunately, no official release date or window has been provided for this much-anticipated project.

That being said, it could arguably be better for this VR version of the popular title to be out before the series' next major entry, Grand Theft Auto 6, releases in Fall 2025. So, in this article, we will take a look at five reasons why GTA San Andreas VR could be released before GTA 6.

Note - This article is subjective and only reflects the writer's opinions.

Here are 5 possible reasons why GTA San Andreas VR could release before GTA 6

1) It has seemingly been in development for a long time

Mark Zuckerburg confirmed GTA San Andreas VR during a Facebook Connect event in 2021. Even back then, it was stated that the project was "in development" and it has now been nearly three years since the announcement.

Notably, the original game was developed and released just two years after its predecessor, GTA Vice City. And while bringing it over to Quest is understandably a different process altogether, it should be out within the next year-and-a-half if its development has been going on smoothly.

2) Making amends

Rockstar Games is undeniably one of the biggest names in gaming, but the developer's reputation has taken a bit of a hit among fans due to lackluster GTA Online updates lately, Shark Cards, and GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition's disastrous launch.

Some are even worried about GTA 6 possibly being toned down. However, releasing a classic like GTA San Andreas in such a fun and unique way through its VR iteration could put the developer in a good light among those who seem to have lost faith.

3) Building hype

Just like Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto is an immensely popular brand. However, it too has suffered from some lows, mostly due to many growing bored of GTA 5 and Online. The latter has received constant DLCs, but it is still a 10-year-old game.

While GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated video game of all time, GTA San Andreas VR could act as a breath of fresh air for the series before the sequel, potentially generating even more hype and excitement around it in the process.

4) Would get overshadowed by GTA 6 if released after it

As already stated, GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated video game ever. The title's launch would very likely overshadow anything else releasing close to it, especially within the Grand Theft Auto series itself.

Despite GTA San Andreas VR being quite a unique and intriguing concept, it is hard to see it getting the deserved attention even if it drops within a year or two after GTA 6 releases, as fans would be a lot more interested in a brand-new game.

5) Best advertisement for Quest

GTA San Andreas VR was confirmed for the Quest 2 back in 2021. VR gaming has gained popularity in recent times, but it isn't as popular as other mainstream platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, or PC. An all-time classic like San Andreas, however, could be the best advertisement for Quest, likely bringing a lot more attention to the platform.

But why this needs to happen before GTA 6 releases is in relation to the previous point on this list. Needless to say, those working on the GTA San Andreas VR project wouldn't want to run the risk of it getting overshadowed after so many years of hard work.
