Those who have installed mods for GTA 5 may have used a tool named Script Hook V for the same at some point. It is an essential prerequisite for most mods designed for Rockstar Games' title, as it allows one to use its script native functions in custom .asi plugins. However, the tool can sometimes run into a critical error, preventing the use of any mods or access to the game itself.

This may seem like a major issue but is often easy to fix. In this article, we look at what causes the Script Hook V Critical Error for GTA 5, how to fix it, and a few other things to know about it.

The Script Hook V Critical Error is caused by using an outdated version of the tool with an updated version of GTA 5. The game gets updated whenever Rockstar releases a patch or a new DLC, such as the recent Bottom Dollar Bounties update. So, you will also require an updated version of Script Hook V for things to work as intended.

In a nutshell, you will have to download a fresh (and updated) version of the tool and install it where Grand Theft Auto 5 is installed on your PC. This should fix the Script Hook V Critical Error.

An easy way to check if the correct version has been installed is by hovering your mouse cursor over the application icon (located where the game is installed) and checking its File version. The value mentioned there should be the same as the File version of your downloaded ScriptHookV.dll.

The Bottom Dollar Bounties update for Grand Theft Auto 5's multiplayer dropped on June 25, 2024, while its corresponding version of Script Hook V was made available a few days later.

However, Rockstar has released a new GTA 5 update today (a patch), June 17, 2024, but the tool's corresponding version is not available as of writing.

That being said, it should be launched in a few days from now, which is usually the case, after which you can try downloading the latest version from the following link:

If the File versions of the game and Script Hook V match and you still encounter a Critical Error (or any other issues), try disabling any antivirus software, properly re-install the mod tool, or reinstall/update the game, and then install Script Hook V.
