"why not ps4 ?": Some GTA 6 fans believe the game could run on a PlayStation 4

Although Rockstar Games has announced GTA 6 only for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S so far, some fans believe that the upcoming game could also run on the PlayStation 4. Citing the example of Xbox Series S, which has less power than the Xbox Series X, user @PogoX321 on X asked:

"...if it can run on Xbox Series S which is pretty much holding GTA 6 back, then why not PS4?"

The gaming community is somewhat divided on whether or not Grand Theft Auto 6 should be released on the PlayStation 4. However, many are still confident that the game could run on the said console. X user jack (@heatherluvspie) stated:

"...The PS4 isn’t some ancient console that blows up when you open any next-gen game. Please take a look at the graphics and performance of the last of us 2, some of the greatest graphics in modern gaming, and runs smoothly at 60 FPS on PS4."

Another user, JOHN REDFIELD (@Bolonga1063801), cited examples of Red Dead Redemption 2, Uncharted 4, Just Cause 4, and many other games that ran on the base PS4 with little to no issues. They stated that if those games could smoothly run on the PlayStation 4, then Grand Theft Auto 6 should not have any issues either:

qazi saab (@therealasliatta) stated that PlayStation 5’s fate is dependent on the upcoming GTA title’s sale records.

However, some fans also supported Rockstar's decision to not release GTA 6 on old-gen consoles. Talking about the advancements in gaming technology, Prophetology (@ProphetofSong) stated:

“There are countless games that they have tried to make work cross-gen and they run like complete sh*t. Technology has advanced way more than you think it has lol. GTA 6 is not going to limit itself so the people on PS4 don’t feel left out…”

Another user, Baron (@BaronKube), explained why the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 on old consoles is not a practical idea:

“We’re going into the 5th year of the PS5/XSX era. Wanting GTA 6 to be on PS4 is equivalent to wanting RDR 2 on PS3 back in 2018”

Is the GTA 6 release getting delayed till 2026?

As of now, there is no official news of Grand Theft Auto 6 getting delayed till 2026. Although there were some rumors that the studio would delay the release, Take-Two Interactive still states the upcoming game’s release window as fall 2025. Therefore, the delay rumor is a hoax at the moment.

Rockstar Games recently released the GTA 6 trailer on Bilibili (a Chinese video streaming platform), and the video showed the release period as 2025 as well.
