The Hockey India League will return after seven long years after it was last played in 2017. This edition of the league will feature 14 teams in total, eight of which will be men's teams and six women's teams.

The player registrations started a few days back and now Hockey India has announced the initiation of the compilation of coaches and support staff to recommend to the respective Hockey India franchises.

The governing authority of hockey in the country has opened the floor for applications and the deadline for the same is July 15. The governing body has welcomed registrations from both Indian and foreign coaches.

Notably, this will mark the first time that a women's league will be hosted simultaneously with the men's league. The decision is expected to help in the growth of the talent pool as hockey is one of the most celebrated sports in India.

Running the women's league will also help elevate the status of women's hockey and garner more attraction from women around the country to participate or take up the sport.

Although the dates have not yet been decided for the leagues to commence, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has sanctioned a window from the last week of December 2024 to the first week of February 2025 in which the league will be scheduled.

What did the notable dignitaries say?

President of Hockey India and former Padma Shri winner Dr. Dilip Tirkey said the following about the upcoming Hockey India League:

"We are excited to welcome coaches and support staff from around the globe to be a part of the revived Hockey India League. The 2024-2025 edition will not only showcase top-tier hockey but also provide a platform for professionals to contribute to the growth and development of the sport in India.”

Adding to the words of the President, Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh said:

"The opening of registration for coaches and support staff marks a significant step towards the successful relaunch of the Hockey India League.
"By inviting both Indian and international professionals to join our league, we aim to bring a diverse range of skills and experiences that will enhance the quality of the competition. We are confident that this inclusive approach will foster innovation and drive the performance of our teams to new levels."
