The Calgary Flames have been a tricky team to decipher in the NHL playoff picture, moving in and out of it all season.
The Flames were one of the best teams in the league last season but were knocked out in the second round of the playoffs by the rival Oilers. If they want to make the big dance this season, they will need to make significant upgrades before the NHL trade deadline on Friday (Mar. 3).
Players Calgary Flames could target at trade deadline
Here are three players the Calgary Flames should trade for before the NHL trade deadline.
#1 Joonas Korpisalo
The Calgary Flames should consider trading for Joonas Korpisalo, the goaltender for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Flames have had inconsistent goaltending this season, and Korpisalo could provide some stability in the crease. He has shown flashes of brilliance in his career, including a five-overtime game in the playoffs two years ago.
Korpisalo is a strong positional goaltender who can make difficult saves look easy. He's also signed to a reasonable contract, which could be appealing to the Flames, given their salary cap situation.
While it would likely require giving up some assets to acquire Korpisalo, he could be a valuable addition to the Flames' roster and help them make a playoff push.
#2 Tyler Bertuzzi
The Calgary Flames should consider trading for Tyler Bertuzzi, the forward for the Detroit Red Wings.
The Flames have struggled offensively this season and could use some help up front. Bertuzzi is a gritty player who's not afraid to go to the dirty areas of the ice and can also contribute offensively.
Bertuzzi is also signed to a reasonable contract, which could be appealing to the Flames, given their salary cap situation. He could add an element of grit and tenacity the Flames have been missing since trading Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers and spark a playoff run.
#3 Cam Talbot
The Calgary Flames should consider trading for Cam Talbot, the goaltender for the Ottawa Senators.
Talbohasn’t had the season he was hoping for since being traded from the Minnesota WIld. So a change of scenery to a contender may bring him some good luck as a B option for Jacob Markstrom. The Flames have had inconsistent goaltending this season. Talbot could provide some stability in the crease.
He has plenty of experience in the league, including a run to the Stanley Cup final with the New York Rangers in 2014. Talbot is also signed to a reasonable contract, which could be appealing to the Flames, given their salary cap situation.
