Cale Makar is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Avalanche selected him as the fourth overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. In 2018, Makar joined Canada's under-20 team for the World Junior Championships in Buffalo, where he won gold and led all defensemen in scoring. Despite his success, he declined an invitation to the Canadian senior team for the 2018 Winter Olympics to focus on his commitments at UMass.

After completing two seasons in the NCAA with the UMass Minutemen, Makar swiftly transitioned to the NHL during the 2019–20 season, making an immediate impact and earning the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year. His outstanding performance continued in his second professional season, leading to a nomination for the James Norris Memorial Trophy in recognition of the league's best defenseman. Makar clinched the Norris Trophy in the subsequent 2021–22 season. In 2022, he played a pivotal role in the Avalanche's Stanley Cup victory and was honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the 2022 playoffs.
