The New York Rangers have locked up forward Filip Chytil for the next four years. Chytil, who is in the midst of a breakout campaign, has recorded a career-high number of goals, assists and points this season, making him a key piece of the Rangers' future.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the deal is worth just over $4.4 million per season. Friedman believes that the deal is a great one for both the player and the team, as Chytil will earn almost $18 million over the four-year contract, and the Rangers have secured him at a reasonable and fair number. On the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman said:
"I think the Chytil deal is a great deal for both player and team. The player is going to get $18 million almost. That is great for the player. The Rangers get him at a really fair and reasonable number.
"The one thing I think that is really good for the Rangers because they have taken a lot of criticism for the development of forwards. Chytil is a big success story and I think a lot of that is on the player."
The Rangers have taken a lot of criticism for their development of forwards, but Filip Chytil's success story shows that the team is capable of developing players. However, Friedman notes that players also have to be self-motivated and determined to be successful on their own:
"You are not going to develop anybody if the player isn’t going to be determined and desires to be successful on their own. You have to be self motivated. I think that is a big one for the Rangers to say, ‘We knew what we were doing with this guy.’ I think it is great for the team and the player."
The New York Rangers made a smart move by extending Filip Chytil's contract. Elliotte Friedman's praise for the deal highlights the importance of developing young players and securing them at reasonable prices. Rangers have a bright future ahead of them, and Chytil is a big part of that future.
