Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov suffered a knee injury during the game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday and could miss the rest of the season.
The Hurricanes released a statement saying he had undergone an MRI on Monday and would be out indefinitely.
"Andrei had an MRI on Monday afternoon, and had a consultation with our team doctors," Hurricanes President Don Waddell said. "In the interest of being thorough, we are continuing to gather information along with Andrei to make the best decision for his health. We will provide further information after a decision is made."
The Hurricanes are reportedly getting a second opinion on Svechnikov's injury, which appears to be an ACL tear.
Fans took to Twitter to express their opinion on Svechnikov's injury:
Svechnikov has played 64 games this season, averaging 18 minutes per game. He has scored 23 goals, including four game winners, at a shooting percentage of 11.2%. He has also assisted 32 times for a total of 55 points.
How Andrei Svechnikov's injury could impact Carolina Hurricanes' 2022-23 season
The Hurricanes have done well offensively and have scored 213 goals in 63 games this season. Goal contributions have come primarily from Martin Necas, Sebastian Aho, and Svechnikov. The three have contributed 85 goals and 95 assists. The injury to Svechnikov, however, is likely to impact their production.
The Hurricanes are first in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division with 94 points but have struggled in the last few games. The offense has failed to click, and with Svechnikov injured, things could get complicated for them.
Their defense has also performed below par, allowing more than three goals per game in the last two.
The Hurricanes face the Winnipeg Jets in their next game on Tuesday night.
