Alex Ovechkin might start tonight against the Ducks.

Following the unfortunate passing of his dad last week, Alex Ovechkin was forced to withdraw from the Washington Capitals lineup. The captain of the Capitals has now returned from Russia.

He also took part in the Caps' optional practice session yesterday and is expected to return for tonight's game against the Anaheim Ducks. However, a decision on whether he will feature in tonight's game or not is yet to be made.

Upon his return from Russia, Ovechkin spoke with the media. The 37-year-old is determined to return to the lineup as soon as possible and serve his club amid their poor run of results.

Ovechkin said:

"I didn't talk to coach Peter Laviolette, but we'll see. I just want to come back right away, put my mind in adifferent position. We're strugglung right now, so I just want to try to do my best to bring energy, bring something to the team."- Ovechkin via NHL.com

It has been a sad week for Ovechkin and the NHL community and fans around the world have showered their love and support for Ovi and his family during this period of mourning.

Alex Ovechkin last played for the Capitals against San Jose Sharks on Sunday (February 12). Since his absence, the Capitals have lost four games on the bounce, with their latest setback coming on Tuesday, February 21, when the Capitals lost to Detroit Red Wings, 3-1.

Overall, the Capitals have struggled in their last five games and have not managed to secure a single victory. Washington Capitals are presently sixth in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 28-25-6.

There is fierce competition for a second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Florida Panthers are presently in second position in the Wild Card standings, leading the Washington Capitals by just two points.

Alex Ovechkin has been a key goal-scoring contributor for the Caps this season. Ovi leads the Caps in goal scoring with 54 points on 32 goals and 22 assists in 54 games.

The Caps' prospects of making the playoffs are realistic and Ovechkin provides the complete package that the club requires right now in their quest to make it.

Washington Capitals will welcome Anaheim Ducks to the Capital One Arena tonight. The puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m ET.
