For the first time in NHL history, the game between the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals was broadcast live as an animation involving characters from the popular show Big City Greens. The NHL imagined it to reach the younger generation and generate more interest to help the sport grow.

ESPN, Disney Channel, and the NHL have partnered to create the show. ESPN Edge Innovation Center, NHL EDGE, and their partners will handle the production. The game was broadcast live on ESPN+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney+.

NHL Twitter reacted to the same while expressing joy. Many also asked to make it an annual affair. Here are a few tweets on the same.

The game saw the Rangers defeat the Capitals with a scoreline of 5-3. The Rangers took the lead in the fifth minute through Mika Zibanejed. Due to the solid defense of the Rangers, it took the Capitals 10 minutes to find their way back in with a strike from Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

The Rangers struck back twice later in the first period to end it in their favor. The Rangers continued their dominance in the second period and scored early to keep the momentum going until the end. Even though both teams scored similar goals in the third period, the Rangers had a buffer of two goals and won it 5-3.

What's next for the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals?

The New York Rangers are placed third in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan with 86 points. They've scored 207 goals and are averaging under three goals per game on the defensive front.

They will focus on the points gap with the New Jersey Devils in the second spot. Having won their last game, they will look to benefit from it against the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 16.

On the other hand, the Washington Capitals are currently sixth in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division with 71 points, seven behind the fourth spot.

The Capitals have done well on offense, with 207 goals in 67 games. However, the defense has shown rustiness in the second half and is conceding more than three goals per game.

Having lost three of their last five games, the Capitals are stuck in a difficult situation and need improvements to make it to the playoffs.

The Capitals will play the Buffalo Sabres next on March 15.
