The St. Louis Blues have acquired forward Jakub Vrana from the Detroit Red Wings. In exchange, the Red Wings received forward Dylan McLaughlin and a 2025 seventh-round pick as part of the deal. The trade announcement was made by the St. Louis Blues via their official Twitter handle on Friday.
The Washington Capitals selected Jakub Vrana 13th overall in the first round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He was also a member of the Capitals' Stanley Cup-winning team in 2018. Jakub joined the Detroit Red Wings during the 2022-21 NHL season and has remained with the team since.
Jakub Vrana signed a three-year, $15.75 million contract with the Wings on Aug. 10, 2021. He has a $5.25 million salary cap hit and will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2023-24 season. As part of the agreement with the Blues, the Red Wings retained 50% of Jakub's salary ($2.625 million), while the Blues will pay $2.625 million for his services.
He has appeared in five games this season and has two points (one goal, one assist). Vrana has appeared in 326 NHL games and has 189 points, including 98 goals and 91 assists. The Blues are in a rebuilding phase, with the addition of Jakub Vrana seen as a good long-term signing for the club.
Dylan McLaughlin joined the Blues as a free agent on July 14, 2022. He did, however, spend his time in the AHL with the Blues' affiliate Springfield Thunderbirds. McLaughlin has played in six AHL games this season, scoring one goal. Following the completion of the trade, the Red Wings loaned the 27-year-old forward back to the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds.
