Tanner Jeannot and Pat Maroon both had to leave the Tampa Bay Lightning's match against the New York Islanders on Thursday night due to injuries. In the third period, the team declared both players out for the rest of the match.
Why did Tanner Jeannot leave the game?
After tripping over Islanders defender Scott Mayfield and landing uncomfortably on his right leg, Tanner Jeannot departed the game.
About halfway through the second period, Jeannot left the game after spending 6:25 on the ice before falling. Late in the second period, Maroon departed the game after receiving a skate to his rib area from Islanders forward Bo Horvat.
After the game, Lightning head coach Jon Cooper expressed his deep concern about Jeannot's injury.
"That's a tough one because he's a big part of our team, and he was really coming into his own. To see that happen, those are tough ones to watch."
A timeline could be defined after a future evaluation, which is anticipated to take place in a few days.
Why is Tanner Jeannot important to the Tampa Bay Lightning?
The 25-year-old Jeannot has played for Tampa Bay in 19 games since being obtained by the Lightning from the Nashville Predators before this year's NHL trade deadline. He has one goal and three assists.
In 76 games in 2022–23, the seasoned Maroon has scored five goals and 14 points. The Lightning will face the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the playoffs because they are now third in the Atlantic Division.
The New York Islanders thrashed the Lightning with all of this going on
Ilya Sorokin made 29 stops. Adam Pelech, Brock Nelson, Kyle Palmieri, and Ryan Pulock all scored in the second period, and the New York Islanders defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-1 on Thursday night to maintain their lead in the Eastern Conference wild card race.
The Islanders, who had dropped their previous two contests and three of their previous five, also received goals from Simon Holmstrom and Bo Horvat. The victory gave the Islanders two crucial points in their competition with Florida and Pittsburgh for the two wild card positions to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Nelson also contributed two aides.
This won't affect the Lightning in any way as they have already sealed their playoff spot, but Tanner Jeannot's injury does leave a lot to think about for the team and coach Jon Cooper. He will probably miss the game against the Ottawa Senators this Sunday.
