P.K. Subban is a Canadian professional hockey player who played 13 seasons in the NHL between 2009-2022.

Subban is a former professional ice hockey defenseman from Canada. He spent 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and New Jersey Devils between 2009 and 2022.

Subban was chosen by the Canadiens in the second round, 43rd overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. In 2013, he won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman and tied Kris Letang for the season's most points among defensemen. He signed an eight-year, $72 million contract with the Canadiens in the summer of 2014, which runs through the 2021-22 season.

Subban was traded to the Nashville Predators after the 2015-16 season, where he spent three seasons before being traded to New Jersey in 2019. He also works as an NHL analyst.

5. P.K. Subban from the Caribbean to Canada

Subban is already a non-traditional player in the NHL as a black athlete, but it's his background that makes him more intriguing. Before he was born, both of his parents immigrated to Canada from the Caribbean islands. Karl’s father was born in Jamaica, and Maria, his mother, is from Montserrat in the Leeward Islands. In 1970, both moved to Canada.

Despite the Subbans' overall athleticism, hockey remains the family's dominant sport, and all three of their youngest children, P.K., Malcolm, and Jordan, were drafted by NHL teams. P.K., the oldest brother and a member of the New Jersey Devils, is well-known among hockey fans. The middle brother Malcolm, a goaltender, was instrumental for the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18, filling in for the injured Marc-Andre Fleury. He was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks at the 2020 Trade Deadline. Jordan, the eldest brother, is a defenseman for the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.

Since Malcolm joined the Golden Knights, the teams have met four times, with Malcolm starting two of them. They first met on December 8th, 2017, when the Golden Knights won 4-3 in a shootout. It was the 10th time in league history where brothers competed against one another, one as a skater and the other as a netminder.

In September 2015, P.K. Subban made a financial commitment of $10 million over seven years to Montreal Children's Hospital through the foundation, and in response, the atrium was named after him. P.K. Subban played cricket and soccer as a child in Jamaica. When his family relocated to Canada, he fell in love with hockey. His parents bought him used skates from the Salvation Army so he could fit in with other kids his age. Despite never playing at a high level, he became a lifelong fan of hockey and instilled that love in his children. Subban's sister, Maria, was also athletic and excelled at what she did. She won a provincial gold medal as a member of a 4 x 100-meter relay team in high school. That athleticism was passed down to her and Karl's children, including Natassia, the eldest, a basketball player.
