Wayne Gretzky has appeared in numerous advertisements as an endorsement for a variety of products both during and after his NHL career. Nonetheless, many of the advertisements featured either a film of Gretzky playing hockey intercut with product images, or they featured him sincerely discussing why the product he was promoting was a good idea.
Well, I've put together a list of the six funniest Wayne Gretzky ads as a funny memoir of "The Great One".
#1. Pizza Delivery Guy
Wayne Gretzky understood in 1994 that a freshly made pizza is the only kind that truly tastes excellent. See Wayne glide across a sheet of freezing ice to bring a hot pizza to a child's door. A kid goes to the door to open it after the bell rings and he is surprised to the core after watching Gretzky as the pizza guy.
#2. McDonald's Lunch
By the time Gretzky was playing for the New York Rangers, his acting skills had significantly improved. Mats Sundin...just watch the video, I guess. The loser of this crazy puck-shooting competition between the two centers must buy the winning lunch at McDonald's. At McDonald's for lunch? What, do these guys play in the AHL? Whatever the case, this advertisement is considerably superior to the dish it is advertising.
#3. Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey
Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey was a separate hockey video game promoted by Gretzky thirteen years earlier. Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey was one of four games required if you owned a Nintendo 64. (Super Mario 64, GoldenEye, and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire are the other three). Gretzky's facial expressions in this advertisement are amusing, as is his tirade at the end about poor game officiating.
#4. Bubble Boys
Gretzky appeared in several Bud Light commercials a year after his retirement, alongside the "Bubble Boys," two animated talking hockey players from the table hockey game known as "bubble hockey." Commissioner of the "Bubble Boys Hockey League" Gretzky was appointed.
The following commercial in which Gretzky fantasized about what it would be like to play table hockey is even better.
#5. The coolest game on earth
"The Coolest Game on Earth" was the NHL's catchphrase in late 1990s. In the ad, Gretzky maintains composure while Mark Messier loses it during a game of chess. In this commercial, Gretzky kills it with his subtlety, as opposed to the third one on the list where his exaggerated rage was humorous.
#6. Dennis Leary
In 1994, Wayne Gretzky and actor Dennis Leary shot some of the funniest clips to promote ice hockey games on ESPN. Apparently, Gretzky was Leary's favorite player in the ice hockey sport. Culver City, California ice rink, 1994 shooting To Meet and Skate with his hero, Leary did this as a favor. We were advised that it would be very difficult for him to make him laugh. The plan was successful.
And a bonus
Since it is so lousy, with awkward dialog, poor puns, and a terrible melody, this 7-Up commercial is amusing. The Great One has come a long way as an actor, as evidenced by the comparison to the Coyotes commercial from 2007.
