In an unexpected turn of events, New York Rangers defenseman K'Andre Miller was kicked out of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Kings. He was caught spitting on Drew Doughty, and officials took appropriate action.
The incident took place in the first period and was out of character for Miller. You can watch the video below:
The ejection had little outcome on the result, as the Rangers came out 5-2 winners. Still, it was an ugly scene and Miller will likely face disciplinary action.
Fans on Twitter reacted to the news, condemning K'Andre Miller, while complimenting New York for reaching the win without him.
The comments were mostly similar to those above, however, there were some that were racially abusive. The only crumb of comfort is that such comments were lambasted by other users and swiftly taken down. As such, fans began to stand up for Miller, although not defending his actions.
K'Andre Miller's NHL career
K'Andre Miller started his career in the NHL with the New York Rangers during the 2020-21 season. He has played over 190 games since then, averaging over 21 minutes per game. He has contributed 62 points thus far (18 goals, 44 assists).
Miller has been a key player for the Rangers and is ranked as the 34th best defenseman for his overall contributions this season. He has played over 60 games, and with 30 points (6 goals, 24 assists), he has surpassed his past season performances with over 20 games yet to be played.
New York Rangers 2022-23 season
The New York Rangers are placed third in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan with 77 points. The Rangers have done well offensively and are just seven goals short of breaching the 200 mark this season. Players like Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider have been immense for them.
On the defensive front, New York Rangers have done well by averaging under 3 goals per game.
K'Andre Miller's controversy aside, having won their last game, the Rangers are in a pretty good place right now. Their focus will now be on the upcoming game, where they travel to face the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, March 2.
Miller will likely face a fine and a suspension of sorts, but that is yet to be confirmed.
