"We're finished" - Carolina Hurricanes fans distraught as they go 2-0 down to Florida Panthers in Eastern Conference Finals

Florida Panthers v Carolina Hurricanes - Game Two
Carolina Hurricanes are 2-0 down in the ECF against Florida Panthers.

Carolina Hurricanes have their backs to the wall, as the Florida Panthers have taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the NHL Eastern Conference Finals.

With home advantage gone, the Hurricanes are staring at the possibility of not even returning to the PNC Arena. The Panthers have doggedly shown why they're playing the best form of playoff hockey while leaving higher-seeded teams befuddled.

The Hurricanes are now on the verge of an embarassing exit from the playoffs. The Conference Finals seem to be one-sided for now. There's still room to maneuver for Carolina, but there's not much hope among fans.

They're beginning to think that it's over and that there's no possibility of a comeback. One fan said:

"We're finished."

The Florida Panthers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final at PNC Arena on Saturday, thanks to a goal by Matthew Tkachuk at 1:51 of overtime.

Tkachuk scored 12 seconds into a power play after playing tic-tac-toe with Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart. He buried a shot near the right post. Tkachuk had scored with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth overtime of the Panthers' 3-2 win in Game 1 on Thursday, making it his second consecutive game as the overtime hero.

The Panthers, the second wild card from the East, also received a goal from Aleksander Barkov. Sergei Bobrovsky, meanwhile, made 37 saves and had 63 in Game 1.

At 1:43 in the first period, Chatfield gave the Carolina Hurricanes a 1-0 advantage. Bobrovsky deflected Stefan Noesen's shot, but Sebastian Aho grabbed the rebound and centered the ball to Chatfield in the left circle, who blasted it just inside the right post.

The Panthers are 6-0 in games that go into OT, including 5-0 on the road in the ongoing playoffs. Florida is now on an eight-game winning run on the road. The Los Angeles Kings in 2012 (ten games) has the longest playoff run in Stanley Cup playoff history.

Together with Maurice Richard, who did it for the Montreal Canadiens against the Detroit Red Wings in the 1951 semifinals, Tkachuk is just the second player in NHL history to score the overtime winner on the road in the opening two games of a playoff series.

In the Eastern Conference Final, the Carolina Hurricanes dropped ten straight games (got swept in 2009 and 2019).
