Born on February 7, 1990, Steven Stamkos is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward and the captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Tampa Bay Lightning selected him as the first overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Stamkos, known as "Stammer," has twice won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for being the NHL's leading goal-scorer in 2010 and 2012. He has also earned NHL second-team All-Star honors in 2011 and 2012, in addition to participating in seven NHL All-Star Games. Stamkos holds the record for the most goals and points scored by a player born in the 1990s. Under his captaincy, the Lightning secured consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.

Steven Stamkos' Championships

Steven Stamkos has won two Stanley Cup Championships. It was with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021. He was the captain of the team during both championship seasons.

During the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, Steven Stamkos, the captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning, faced significant injury challenges. Despite being limited to just one game and playing for a mere 2 minutes and 47 seconds, Stamkos seized the opportunity. In Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Dallas Stars, he scored a crucial first-period goal.

Although Stamkos was unable to play in subsequent playoff games, he played a vital leadership role off the ice. After the Lightning's 2-0 victory in Game 6, Stamkos, as team captain, accepted the Stanley Cup from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, symbolizing their championship triumph.

In the following season, Stamkos played a more active role as the Lightning once again clinched the Stanley Cup. This time, they secured a five-game victory against the Montreal Canadiens in the best-of-7 Final, solidifying their status as back-to-back champions.

Steven Stamkos' Early Life

Stamkos has Macedonian and Scottish roots and spent his childhood in Unionville, Ontario. He participated in the Eastern AAA Hockey League of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA), playing for the Markham Waxers. During his time with the North York Canadiens, he shared the ice with NHL player P. K. Subban. Stamkos achieved success in minor hockey, securing eight consecutive OMHA titles and guiding his Waxers team to victory in the OHL Cup in March 2006. He also took part in the 2003 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Markham Waxers.

His educational journey included attending Central Park Public School and St. Brother André Catholic High School in Markham, Ontario. After a standout season with the Waxers, Stamkos was chosen first overall in the 2006 OHL Draft by the Sarnia Sting. Following his selection by the Sarnia Sting in the OHL draft, Stamkos pursued his education at Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School in Sarnia. In his junior rookie year with the Sting, he notched 92 points and earned a spot on the OHL Second All-Rookie Team. The following season, Stamkos recorded 58 goals and 105 points, securing a place on the OHL second All-Star team and later the CHL first All-Star team. In his draft-eligible season in 2007–08, he maintained a top ranking and received the CHL's Top Draft Prospect Award.
