Tom Chmielewski is a referee in the NHL, his journey started when he was just 12, refereeing youth hockey games. Born to an Air Officer and a paediatric nurse in Illinois, his family later moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Tom completed his graduation from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Arts in History. During his time at the university, he worked as a Linesman in the USA Officiating Development Program and for the Central Hockey League (CHL). Following his graduation, he transitioned to referee and secured a full-time role in the USA Hockey Officiating Development Program. Considering his dedication and good work, he secured a place in the 2011 USHL Clark Cup Finals.

In 2011, Tom got an opportunity to officiate the NHL Prospect tournament in Traverse City, Michigan, his first presence in professional hockey. The following season, he attended the East Coast Hockey League where Tom spent two seasons refereeing and performing in the 2012 Kelly Cup Finals. Tom then got assignments in the American Hockey League during the 2012-2013 season, showcasing his skills and versatility on the ice.

During his time in the AHL, Tom's talent stood out, recognized internationally. The USA Hockey selected him to officiate in the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship Division 1 in France. Tom also officiated in the Southern Professional Hockey League.
