Mikko Rantanen was born on October 29, 1996 in Nousiainen, Finland. The 26-year-old Finnish hockey player was drafted 10th overall in the 2015 NHL entry draft by the Colorado Avalanche.
Rantanen debuted with HC TPS as a 16-year-old in the 2012 season. He also played for them as a 14-year-old at the under-16 level. By 15, Rantanen stole the spotlight when he scored three points (two goals and one assist).
On October 9, 2014, he a two-year contract with TPS to stay in SM Liiga. Though he was only 17 years old and the only player in his third year, Rantanen scored 9 goals, recording 28 points in 56 games. He was also chosen as the alternative captain of the team for his skills and leadership.
Mikko Rantanen also appeared in games for the TPS Junior club, where he was awarded the Best Players Honors for scoring 14 points in 7 games to lead the TPS closer to the Championship. Rantanen was tagged as the top European skater when the Avalanche chose him on June 26, 2015.
Mikko Rantanen’s career with the Colorado Avalanche
On July 13 2015, Mikko Rantanen signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche.
With his impressive performance in training camp, the Avalanche gave Rantanen his debut on October 8, 2015 against the Minnesota Wild. After a series of scoreless games, the Avalanche star was sent to play for AHL affiliate the San Antonio Rampage on October 22, 2015.
Rantanen started showing his potential with the Rampage when he scored his first-ever goal and assist in North America against the Stockton Heat in a 5-1 victory. Rantanen made it to the AHL All-Star Games and then to the second All-Star team with 60 points in 52 games, making him the best overall.
Mikko Rantanen has won several trophies, including the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award and the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.
