Established in 1985, the St. Petersburg Grand Prix began holding IndyCar events in 2003. For the most part, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg has been the IndyCar season opener since 2009. It has 100 laps and is 180 miles (289.68 km) long with an asphalt/concrete surface.
Residents close to the track voiced their displeasure with the St. Petersburg Grand Prix's excessive noise during its early years (1985–1990), and the event was ultimately halted. In 1996, it was revived and moved to a new circuit close to Tropicana Field. After 1997, the racing event was again put on hold for a long time.
Numerous competitions, including the Trans-Am Series, U.S. FF2000, World Challenge, Pro SRF, and Barber Dodge, were held at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix. The St. Petersburg track was brought back to life in 2003 by the CART Championship, however, this was only for a year because the CART series went bankrupt in 2004 due to a dispute between the promoters. In 2005, the race made a comeback as a member of the IndyCar Series and added an American Le Mans Series event to its network.
