St. Petersburg Grand Prix
The St. Petersburg Grand Prix was inaugurated in 1985 and started hosting IndyCar races in 2003. It is known as the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and has served as the season opener for IndyCar mostly since 2009. It has an Asphalt/Concrete surface and is 180 miles (289.68 km) long with 100 laps.
During the early years of the St. Petersburg Grand Prix (1985-1990), residents near the track complained about the amount of noise produced by the racing event and it was eventually put on pause. The race was brought back to life in 1996 and was shifted to a different course near Tropicana Field. The racing event was then again halted after 1997 for many years.
St. Petersburg Grand Prix hosted multiple events ranging from Trans-Am Series, U.S. FF2000, World Challenge, Pro SRF, and Barber Dodge. In 2003, CART Championship revived the St. Petersburg track but only for a year as 2004 saw a dispute among the promoters and the bankruptcy of the CART series. The race returned in 2005 as a part of the IndyCar Series and also expanded its network to host an American Le Mans Series event.
